Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
