A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
